Tips on Windshield Scams

Windshield Scams

Windshield repair/replacement does have its share of scams and/or scam artists who take advantage of unknowing consumers.

To avoid these scams, know what to look for:

Windshield scam artists usually approach you at a gas station or car wash wanting to replace your undamaged or mildly damaged windshield, claiming that it is free and/or that your insurance will pay for it. Sometimes they will even offer freebies such as movie tickets or a lunch to go with their service. Some may even offer money back to cover what your deductible might be. After you agree to the job they will do a quick replacement, often for a windshield that needed a minor repair or nothing. After they do the job they will get your insurance information and contact your insurance company and make a claim saying your windshield was damaged and needed replacement.

There are several problems with these scams. First, the job done could be poorly or done with inferior materials. It may even be dangerous to continue driving without getting your windshield looked at by a professional. Secondly, your insurance premiums could go up, or you could have your insurance policy cancelled on you if several claims are made in a short period of time. Once you give out your insurance information, the scam artist can make multiple claims in a short period of time. Which could ultimately leave you with some major problems. Lastly, the claim made could have you convicted of insurance fraud since you gave out your insurance information. This could mean fines, jail time, and a criminal record.

Some scam artists work out of their vehicle, like the back of a van or truck. They will not have a fixed location where they operate. They will most likely disappear after the job is finished and payment has been made. They do a speedy job and move along so as to not be held liable.

Remember, scam artists will usually come to you to replace your windshield. To avoid windshield scams and scam artists that are coming up to you, the word you need to be familiar with saying is, NO! Scam artists can be very aggressive and will give you many reasons to think that having them do your windshield replacement is something you need. Be blunt, say no, and leave.
